Association of Supporters for North Korean Diplomat Jo Song Gil’s Defection to South Korea
It was reported that North Korea’s Charge D’Affairs, ad interim, to Italy, Jo Song-gil and his family have escaped from the North Korean diplomatic mission and have begun their journey of seeking asylum.
However, at this moment it is not certain whether Jo Song-gil and his family are receiving the appropriate security protection from the Italian government and whether they have been able to depart on their path to seek asylum in light of the current inter-Korean and US-North Korean relations.
According to the Korean constitution as well as related domestic and foreign laws, all North Korean citizens who escape North Korean territory have the right to receive protection from the Korean government, and have the right to seek their place of asylum.
Thus, Jo Song-gil and his family have the freedom to choose their place of asylum, and since they are the natural Korean citizens, they deserve the the right to be protected by the Korean government.
Today we established the ‘Citizens’ Coalition in Support for North Korean Diplomat Jo Song-gil and his Family’s Journey to Republic of Korea’ and call upon the Korean and Italian governments to protect their security and facilitate their safe residence as stated belows:
- We call upon the Korean government to urge the Italian government to provide protection to Jo Song-gil and his family, and within a safe, free environment, check their intentions to come to Korea.
- We call upon the Italian government to provide Jo Song-gil and his family all the conditions needed to go the country of their choice in accordance to international law and spirit of humanity.
- In the case that Jo Song-gil and his family want to come to Korea, we urge Korean government to take a pro-active stance in providing safe journey to Korea.
